How to Start Drawing When You Feel Stuck
A simple way to start drawing again, even when your mind feels stuck.
Why It Feels Hard to Start
At some point, every artist hits a wall.
You sit down to draw, but nothing comes to mind. The pressure to create something good makes it even harder to begin. Instead of drawing, you hesitate. You overthink. You wait.
The hardest part is not drawing. It is starting.

A Simple Way to Break Through
At The Zen Pencil, I use a method that removes the pressure completely.
Instead of trying to come up with the perfect idea, I start with something random.
Three simple items.
They do not need to make sense together. In fact, it is better if they don’t.
This is the foundation of the 3 Item Art Challenge
3 Items – 1 Drawing – Pure Zen

How It Works
Choose any three items at random.
They can be objects, symbols, or anything that comes to mind. The goal is not to plan the drawing. The goal is to begin.
Once you have your three items, start drawing and allow the piece to evolve naturally. The randomness removes expectation and replaces it with curiosity.
You are no longer trying to create something perfect. You are simply exploring.
— 🌿 —
From Random to Meaningful
What starts as randomness often becomes something meaningful.
As the drawing develops, connections begin to form. Shapes flow together. Energy builds. The piece finds its own balance.
This is where Zen Cat Art comes to life.
Each drawing becomes a calm and intentional composition, even though it began with something completely random.

Just Start
If you feel stuck, do not wait for inspiration.
Pick three items. Sit down. Begin.
Let go of expectations and allow the process to guide you.
The moment you start, the block begins to disappear.
And from that simple beginning, something meaningful can grow.
